Martin Cooper : Le père du téléphone portable voit le côté obscur mais espère aussi dans les nouvelles technologies
Tenant le téléphone portable en brique encombrant qu’il est crédité d’avoir inventé il y a 50 ans, Martin Cooper pense à l’avenir.
En 1876, l’Américain Graham Bell dépose le brevet pour l’invention du téléphone. Près d’un siècle plus tard, c’est encore un ingénieur américain, Martin Cooper, qui invente en 1973 le téléphone portable.
Le 3 avril 1973 précisément, un appel-test est passé à New York. Le jeune ingénieur de Motorola a le sens de l’humour : il appelle son ennemi juré de l’époque, Joel Engel, son rival chez le concurrent Bell Labs (ceux qui avaient justement inventé le téléphone de voiture).
Lorsqu’il a passé le premier appel dans une rue de New York en 1973 à partir d’un prototype gris épais, il ne savait pas que notre monde – et nos informations – seraient encapsulés dans une élégante gaine de verre où nous cherchons, nous connectons, aimons et achetons.
« J’ai composé son numéro, et incroyable : c’est lui qui m’a répondu, pas sa secrétaire. Je lui ai dit : ‘salut, Joël, c’est Martin Cooper’. Il me répond très poliment : ‘salut Martin.’ Je lui dis : ‘Joel, je t’appelle d’un téléphone cellulaire, mais un vrai ! un personnel, qu’on tient dans la main, un téléphone portable !’ Silence à l’autre bout du fil … », a raconté Martin Cooper à nos confrères de CBS.
Ce premier téléphone est lourd et pèse plus d’un kilo. Mais qu’importe, Martin Cooper vient de changer l’histoire.
Il est optimiste quant au fait que les futures avancées de la technologie mobile peuvent transformer des vies humaines, mais s’inquiète également des risques que les smartphones font peser sur la vie privée des jeunes.
« Mon opinion la plus négative est que nous n’avons plus aucune vie privée parce que tout ce qui nous concerne est maintenant enregistré quelque part et accessible à quelqu’un qui a un désir assez intense pour l’obtenir », a déclaré l’homme de 94 ans à l’Associated Press au MWC, ou Mobile World Congress, le plus grand salon professionnel du sans fil au monde où il recevait un prix à vie cette semaine à Barcelone.
