Le cinéaste malien Souleymane Cissé à reçu mercredi 17 mai 2023, une distinction prestigieuse pour saluer la carrière inédite de l’homme, le Carrosse d’or de la Quinzaine des cinéastes, à l’ouverture du Festival de Cannes en France. Pour le cinéaste malien, le Carrosse d’Or qu’il vient de recevoir est une incitation « à faire de nouveaux films » dans l’espoir de renverser la « censure » qui, selon lui, frappe le cinéma africain.
Une « censure » et du « mépris » empêchent la diffusion des films africains dans le monde, estime le réalisateur malien Souleymane Cissé, 83 ans, alors qu’à ce jour l’Afrique n’a raflé qu’une seule Palme la récompense suprême du prestigieux Festival de Cannes.
« Cette censure occidentale, elle est très grave. C’est un mépris. Et je le dis au niveau des distributeurs, il y a des films qu’on pourrait voir dans les salles de cinéma. On ne le fait pas, tout simplement pour ne pas mettre à la même hauteur l’image de l’Afrique avec les autres. Et ça, c’est dommage » a déclaré le cinéaste.
« Pour moi, c’est d’abord un problème de distributeur. Tant qu’ils ne porteront pas d’intérêt pour nos films, rien ne changera. On a beau produire, faire tout ce qu’on veut, tant que le public européen, américain ou chinois, n’aura pas accès à nos films, on n’avancera pas », ajoute-t-il.
