Certains blâment la sorcellerie et accusent un villageois éminent d’avoir installé un objet de cette nature, aussi appelé fétiche, qu’ils affirment être à l’origine de tout cela. « Je dis que c’est le fétiche qui détruit le village« , affirme le chef local, Nanan Patrice Koffi.

Les autorités affirment avoir trouvé des traces d’une bactérie commune, mais mortelle : le clostridium, tant sur le fétiche que sur les cadavres qu’elles ont testés. Présent dans le sol et le tractus intestinal des animaux, y compris les humains, le microbe peut causer le botulisme, une maladie qui provoque des vomissements et une paralysie musculaire.
« Actuellement les corps sont encore à la morgue« , raconte Dorothée Ahou Kouamé, grand-mère d’une victime de 3 ans. « On n’a pas encore fait son enterrement. Depuis ce jour-là je n’ai pas encore revue le corps de ma petite fille . On nous interdit de la voir. Je souffre. Je n’arrive pas à manger correctement. Ça me revient chaque fois. Elle me manque.«
