Qui est vraiment Paul Ahyi ?
Né à Abomey, au Bénin voisin, en 1930, c’est dans la capitale togolaise Lomé qu’il est décédé en 2010. Sculpteur, architecte, peintre, décorateur et auteur, Paul Ahyi est vite sorti de son pays puisque, dès 1949, on le retrouve déjà à Dakar où il est parti poursuivre ses études, jusqu’à son départ à Lyon en 1952. Dans la capitale des Gaules, il fréquente l’École des Beaux-Arts. Son assiduité et son talent lui permettent d’intégrer l’École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, où il reçoit en 1959, en plus de son diplôme, la Médaille et le premier prix de Peinture. Arrive 1960, l’année de la proclamation de l’Indépendance. Le voilà qui dessine le drapeau du futur État du Togo. Un pied dans l’histoire de son pays, mais aussi dans l’histoire artistique du Togo avec le Premier prix de sculpture de son pays qui lui est décerné en 1965. En 1970, il est fait Officier de l’Ordre du Mono, prestigieuse distinction du Togo, avant d’être fait Officier des Arts et Lettres et Commandeur des Palmes académiques françaises. De quoi comprendre que l’artiste est reconnu pour ses sculptures monumentales, y compris sa participation au Monument de l’Indépendance à Lomé. Et sa stature internationale est réelle au regard de ses sculptures et statues extérieures que l’on trouve au Vatican, au Sénégal, au Bénin, en Côte d’Ivoire, au Nigeria et en Corée du Sud. Artiste aux multiples facettes, Paul Ahyi s’est essayé de brillante manière à la réalisation de bijoux, dans l’art de la poterie, dans la céramique et les tapisseries. Bref, toute une palette qui en dit long sur le mérite qu’il a aujourd’hui d’avoir un musée qui lui soit dédié
