Les autorités maliennes ont appelé dimanche les Etats-Unis à cesser la campagne de désinformation qu’ils mèneraient selon elle.
Cette annonce intervient après les sanctions infligées par Washington à deux officiers maliens accusés d’avoir pris part à un massacre dans le centre du pays en 2022.
Le département d’Etat a annoncé la semaine passée des restrictions de visa contre Moustapha Sangare, alors commandant d’un régiment de commandos parachutistes, et du major Lassine Togola, commandant d’un bataillon de forces spéciales. Les deux hommes « étaient responsables d’éléments des forces armées maliennes qui ont mené les opérations à Moura », dit le département d’Etat.
L’ONU a accusé début mai l’armée malienne et des combattants « étrangers » d’avoir exécuté au moins 500 personnes en mars 2022 lors d’une opération antijihadiste à Moura. Les Occidentaux, dont les Américains, assurent que ces combattants étrangers sont des membres de la société de sécurité privée russe Wagner.
Le Mali dément la présence de Wagner et parle d’instructeurs de l’armée russe déployés au nom d’une coopération d’Etat à Etat. Elle a rejeté le rapport de l’ONU comme biaisé et affirmé que seuls des jihadistes avaient été tués à Moura, et aucun civil.
En même temps que les sanctions contre les deux commandants maliens, le Trésor américain a annoncé des mesures de rétorsion contre Ivan Maslov, qu’il présente comme le chef de Wagner au Mali.
Les Etats-Unis ont aussi accusé Wagner de chercher à se servir du Mali comme intermédiaire pour faire parvenir des armes à ses combattants en Ukraine.
Le gouvernement malien « a appris avec stupéfaction la décision unilatérale » du gouvernement américain de sanctionner les deux officiers maliens, « sur l’unique fondement du rapport des Nations unies », a dit son porte-parole, le colonel Abdoulaye Maïga dans un communiqué.
Le 25 mai, les Affaires étrangères maliennes ont « convié » l’ambassadrice des Etats-Unis Rachna Korhonen pour lui signifier « l’extrême gravité des fausses accusations portées contre la République du Mali », a-t-il dit.
Le gouvernement « est contrarié par ces actions qui impactent négativement la coopération bilatérale », a-t-il fait savoir. Il « lance un appel au gouvernement des Etats-Unis d’Amérique pour l’arrêt de la campagne de désinformation contre le Mali », a-t-il déclaré.
