La Côte d’Ivoire a annoncé lundi qu’elle accueillera cette année la Journée mondiale de l’environnement le 5 juin sur le thème des « solutions à la pollution plastique ».
Plus de 150 pays participeront à cette journée, dont le cinquantenaire sera célébré cette année
Jean-Luc Assi, ministre de l’environnement et du développement durable du pays, a qualifié la pollution plastique de « menace pour nous tous » lors de la cérémonie de lancement de cet événement à Abidjan.
« La Côte d’Ivoire est cette année le pays hôte de la Journée mondiale de l’environnement », organisée chaque année par l’ONU, a déclaré le ministre. Le thème de cette édition est « les solutions à la pollution plastique », « un fléau qui nous menace tous », a précisé M. Assi. Pour le ministre, le gouvernement ivoirien s’est engagé à être « un exemple de premier plan en matière de développement durable ».
La Côte d’Ivoire faisait partie des 196 pays qui ont signé les accords de Paris sur le climat en 2016, dans le but de maintenir les températures mondiales en dessous de deux degrés Celsius.
Le gouvernement ivoirien avait également décidé, en mai 2013, d’interdire la production, la commercialisation, la détention et l’utilisation des sachets plastiques.
Mais l’entrée en vigueur de cette décision en novembre 2014 avait déclenché une manifestation de commerçants à Abidjan et elle est aujourd’hui très peu appliquée dans le pays.
Cette édition fait suite à une résolution adoptée en 2022 par l’Assemblée des Nations unies visant à établir un « instrument » juridique « contraignant » sur la pollution plastique, prévu pour fin 2024. Selon le Programme des Nations Unies pour l’environnement (PNUE), 400 millions de tonnes de plastique sont produites chaque année dans le monde, dont la moitié est conçue pour un usage unique.
