DES ÉTUDIANTS OUGANDAIS CRÉENT UNE APPLICATION MOBILE QUI DIAGNOSTIQUE LA MALARIA (PALUDISME )
Les prises de sang, c’est dépassé. La révolution numérique permet maintenant de faire des diagnostics avec un smartphone. Une application pour téléphone qui permet de diagnostiquer la malaria, c’est le pari de ces quatre ougandais étudiants en informatique à l’université de Makerere.
En 21 ans, Brian Gitta a subi tant de prises de sang qu’il en a développé une phobie des aiguilles, relate l’article. Lors de son dernier accès de malaria en décembre 2012, il doit rester alité et imagine un «centre médical mobile» qui offrirait un diagnostic rapide et sans douleur. Dès sa guérison, il travaille à ce projet et c’est ainsi que naît l’application Matibabu (qui signifie «centre médical» en swahili).
« Au début, ce projet a commencé comme un jeu, nous étions juste des amis qui se réunissaient pour faire quelque chose d’excitant », dit Brian Gitta
Brian et ses camarades de l’Université Makerere ont mis au point cet appareil peu coûteux et réutilisable appelé Matibabu qui dépiste rapidement le paludisme sans faire de prise de sang.
L’application Matibabu permet de détecter le parasite avant même l’apparition des symptômes. L’utilisateur insère son doigt dans un appareil sur mesure, le « matiscope», relié au smartphone, pour qu’il examine ses globules rouges. Grâce à la différence de structure entre les globules infectés et les globules sains, l’application peut détecter la malaria sans prélever de sang.
Autre avantage de l’application, selon le site: les résultats sont envoyés directement dans les dossiers de stockage de Microsoft pour être partagés immédiatement avec le médecin du patient
Cette application permettra de traiter la malaria à un stade précoce, avant qu’elle ne puisse causer des troubles mentaux ou d’autres séquelles comme l’anémie.Pour les femmes enceintes, particulièrement vulnérables à la maladie,cela permettra aussi de prévenir les fausses couches.
Aimants et matiscope
‘Matibabu’ qui signifie « traitement » en Swahili, utilise des aimants et un appareil portable sur mesure appelé matiscope.
L’appareil projette une lumière infrarouge sur le doigt de l’utilisateur, détectant une substance appelée cristaux d’hémozoïne, les sous-produits du parasite du paludisme.
Les fabricants croient que Matibabu pourrait faire évoluer la situation en avançant les délais d’analyse puisqu’une prise de sang n’est pas nécessaire et qu’il n’utilise pas de seringues auxquelles les enfants, en particulier, résistent.
Bien qu’encore au stade de prototype, les juges de l’organisation ont qualifié son appareil de dépistage du paludisme de « simple changeur de donne » dans la lutte contre cette maladie mortelle.
Le dernier modèle Matibabu de cinquième génération n’a besoin que de deux minutes pour dépister le paludisme, contre 30 minutes ou plus à l’aide d’un microscope.
L’application devrait arriver sur le marché d’ici deux ans, prévoit l’un des créateurs. Elle sera gratuite, mais le matiscope coûtera entre 20 et 35 dollars…
Par ailleurs, il est important de rappeler que la lutte contre le paludisme est loin d’être achevée. La pandémie de Covid-19 a même ralenti les efforts. En 2020, l’OMS dénombre 69 000 décès dus au paludisme de plus qu’en 2019. Deux tiers ont été causés par les perturbations des services sanitaires pendant la pandémie. Même son de cloche du côté du Fonds mondial, qui dénombre en 2020 une baisse de 4,3 % du nombre de tests de détection du paludisme par rapport à l’année précédente.
