Un mandat qui ressemble à une mission impossible tant son pays semble à la dérive sur tous les plans.
Trois mois après son élection, le 25 février 2023 à la magistrature suprême de son pays, le ‘Nigeria, Tinubu a prêté serment, lundi 29 mai 2023, à Abuja, en tant que président du pays le plus peuplé d’Afrique à une période de défis sans précédent, laissant certains citoyens espérer une vie meilleure et d’autres sceptiques quant à la performance de son gouvernement.
M. Tinubu devient ainsi le 5è président démocratiquement élu du Nigeria dans la 4è République.
L’ancien gouverneur de Lagos, pôle économique du Nigeria, Tinubu, 71 ans, a prêté serment comme président du Nigeria à Abuja, la capitale, en présence de milliers de Nigérians et de plusieurs chefs de gouvernement.
Il succède au président Muhammadu Buhari à la tête d’un pays, le plus peuplé d’Afrique avec plus de 215 millions d’habitants, qui devrait devenir d’ici 2050 le troisième pays le plus peuplé du monde à égalité avec les États-Unis après l’Inde et la Chine.
« En tant que président de la République fédérale du Nigeria, je m’acquitterai de mes devoirs et de mes fonctions honnêtement, au mieux de mes capacités, fidèlement et conformément à la Constitution », a déclaré M. Tinubu devant le président de la Cour suprême Olukayode Ariwoola lors de sa cérémonie d’investiture.
Plusieurs dirigeants d’Afrique ont pris part à la prestation de serment, suivie de parades et de manifestations festives.
La promesse de Tinubu
Tinubu, marié, 4 enfants, ce vieux routier de la politique locale et multimillionnaire, a promis de s’appuyer sur les efforts de Buhari pour offrir des dividendes démocratiques aux citoyens d’un pays où les crises de sécurité meurtrières, la pauvreté généralisée et la faim ont laissé de nombreuses personnes frustrées et en colère. Et avec son élection toujours contestée devant les tribunaux par les partis d’opposition et parmi de nombreux jeunes Nigérians, Tinubu s’est également engagé à réunifier le pays.

Le nouveau président du Nigeria investi, Tinubu, a promis de remettre la première économie africaine sur les rails alors que le pays, pourtant riche en pétrole, s’enfonce dans le marasme. Il hérite d’une croissance économique anémique, d’une dette record et d’une production pétrolière en baisse. L’inflation à deux chiffres, qui a érodé l’épargne et les salaires, est l’un des plus gros problèmes auxquels il sera confronté
Le dossier sécuritaire est le plus urgent pour le nouveau président. Le pays est gangréné par la violence. Pas un jour ne se passe sans attaques de groupes criminels, de jihadistes ou de séparatistes. Les enlèvements, individuel ou de masse, sont monnaie courante. Dans les campagnes, des rivalités pour les terres agricoles entre agriculteurs et éleveurs dégénèrent souvent en affrontements meurtriers. Dans les villes, les gangs font la loi.
Pendant sa campagne, Bola Tinubu a promis de développer un appareil sécuritaire robuste et efficace. En tout cas, c’est le préalable incontournable pour espérer s’attaquer à une situation économique et sociale qui devient hors de contrôle.
Tinubu, un faiseur de roi ?
Bola Ahmed Tinubu appelé affectueusement « Jagaban« – un titre traditionnel qu’il a obtenu à Borgu dans l’État du Niger – devenu un faiseur de roi dans l’État de Lagos après avoir quitté ses charges de gouverneur. Il a dirigé l’état de Lagos en tant que gouverneur de 1999 à 2007, soit 8 ans, puis a encadré ces successeurs, ce qui lui vaut la réputation de « parrain politique », capable de faire en sorte que la carrière de certaines personnes décolle tandis que d’autres sombrent.
Il a également affirmé que sans son influence, le président sortant Muhammadu Buhari, qui a perdu plusieurs fois les élections présidentielles avant de remporter son 1er mandat en 2015, ne serait jamais devenu président.
Le nouveau président, qu’on dit plus ouvert au business que son prédécesseur, devra aller vite. Il a deux mois pour former son gouvernement. La composition du cabinet sera l’occasion d’envoyer un signal fort de sa volonté de redresser le Nigeria… ou pas !
