Angélique Kidjo remporte le prestigieux « Polar Music Prize » 2023 et rejoint Miriam Makeba et Youssou N’Dour
Une nouvelle distinction prestigieuse pour la chanteuse Angélique Kidjo. La Béninoise vient d’être nominée pour le prix Polar Music 2023.
Le prestigieux prix Polar Music a publié, ce mardi, les noms de ses lauréats pour le compte de l’année 2023. Et parmi les nominés, « la diva africaine » du magazine Time, Angélique Kidjo.
« Recevoir le Polar Music Prize est une leçon d’humilité », affirme la lauréate. « Je n’ai pas de mots pour dire à quel point c’est important pour moi. Il s’accompagne d’un sentiment de responsabilité qui m’est conféré en tant qu’artiste pour continuer à faire du bon travail. Je ferai de mon mieux pour être un fier récipiendaire du prix grâce à mon travail en tant qu’ambassadeur itinérant de l’UNICEF, au nom des enfants, et en tant qu’ambassadeur de la musique, pour aider à créer un monde dans lequel nous pouvons tous vivre en paix », poursuit-elle
Née en 1960 un mois avant l’indépendance du Bénin (alors Dahomey), elle chante depuis plus de 30 ans dans ses langues paternelle et maternelle, le fon et le yoruba, ainsi qu’en français et en anglais.
« Angélique Kidjo est une source d’inspiration. C’est l’une des meilleures interprètes-compositrices de la musique internationale », a salué le jury suédois dans un communiqué.
Surnommée « la diva africaine » par le magazine Time, elle a déjà gagné cinq Grammys, plus grosses récompenses de la musique américaine.
Cette nouvelle récompense s’ajoute à une longue liste de distinctions que la chanteuse cumule depuis une trentaine d’années qu’elle est active dans l’industrie musicale.
En dehors de la musique, Angélique Kidjo est une femme engagée, comme elle le dit elle-même, dans la création d’« un monde dans lequel nous pouvons tous vivre en paix ». Et pour cela, elle prend très au sérieux son rôle d’ambassadrice de bonne volonté de l’UNICEF qu’elle assume depuis 2002. De plus, par le truchement de sa fondation dénommée Batonga, elle œuvre à une meilleure éducation des filles à travers une pluralité d’actions. Elle n’est pas non plus absente sur le terrain des questions environnementales.
En tant que lauréate du prix Polar Music 2023, Angélique Kidjo devient le troisième artiste africain à recevoir cette prestigieuse distinction, après la Sud-Africaine, Myriam Makéba, en 2002, le Sénégalais Youssou Ndour, en 2013.
Angélique Kidjo a remporté ce prix international Polar Music, conjointement avec le fondateur britannique de la maison de disque Island Records Chris Blackwell et le compositeur estonien Arvo Pärt.
Le Britannique Chris Blackwell, 85 ans, a lui créé la maison de disques Island Records en 1959, devenue légendaire après avoir accueilli Bob Marley, Cat Stevens, Roxy Music ou encore U2.
Arvo Pärt, décrit à 87 ans comme « le compositeur vivant le plus joué dans le monde » par le jury, a lui été primé pour son invention dans les années 1970 du « tintinnabuli », une technique d’écriture musicale.
Fondé en 1989 par l’ancien manager d’ABBA Stig Anderson, le Prix Polar Music avait récompensé l’année dernière Iggy Pop et l’autrice-compositrice Diane Warren.
Les prix, ainsi qu’une somme de 600.000 couronnes (environ 53.600 euros), seront remis aux lauréats à Stockholm le 23 mai prochain.
