Pfizer a annoncé vendredi que sa pilule anti-Covid(Paxlovid) serait efficace à 89% pour prévenir le risque d’hospitalisation ou de décès, selon les premiers résultats d’essais cliniques.
Le médicament – Paxlovid – est destiné à être utilisé peu après l’apparition des symptômes chez les personnes présentant un risque élevé de maladie grave.
Cette décision intervient au lendemain de l’approbation par l’autorité britannique de réglementation des médicaments d’un traitement similaire de Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD).
Pfizer affirme qu’elle a arrêté les essais prématurément, car les résultats initiaux sont très positifs.
L’entreprise a déclaré avoir l’intention de fournir ces résultats «dès que possible» à l’Agence américaine des médicaments (FDA) en vue d’une demande d’autorisation.
Il s’agit du deuxième traitement de ce type à démontrer des résultats positifs, après le comprimé développé par Merck, qui a été autorisé jeudi dans un premier pays, au Royaume-Uni.
Premiers essais cliniques

L’essai comportera au total 3.000 personnes, mais les recrutements ont désormais été stoppés «face à l’efficacité écrasante» du traitement dans les premiers résultats, a dit Pfizer.
«L’annonce d’aujourd’hui change vraiment la donne dans nos efforts mondiaux pour stopper les ravages causés par cette pandémie», s’est félicité le patron de Pfizer, Albert Bourla, cité dans le communiqué.
«Ces données suggèrent que notre traitement antiviral candidat, si approuvé par les autorités de régulation, a le potentiel de sauver des vies de patients, réduire la gravité des infections du Covid-19, et éviter jusqu’à neuf sur dix hospitalisations», a-t-il ajouté.
Le traitement de Pfizer sera commercialisé sous le nom de Paxlovid.
