Les autorités ghanéennes affirment que plus de huit millions de cartes SIM non enregistrées ont été bloquées dans le pays après que leurs propriétaires n’ont pas respecté le délai d’enregistrement final.
La déconnexion des lignes mobiles signifie que leurs propriétaires ne pourront plus passer d’appels ni accéder à Internet, ni utiliser les services d’argent mobile.
Le ministère ghanéen de la Communication et de la Numérisation et l’Autorité nationale des communications ont déclaré que l’enregistrement obligatoire de la carte SIM visait à lutter contre les crimes tels que la fraude et à assurer la sécurité numérique.
Le processus a commencé en octobre de l’année dernière lorsque le gouvernement a publié une directive pour que les gens enregistrent leurs lignes mobiles.
La première étape de l’enregistrement implique que les clients de téléphonie mobile associent leurs cartes SIM aux détails de leur carte d’identité nationale.
Ils font ensuite capturer leurs données biométriques par les fournisseurs de services de téléphonie mobile pour terminer l’enregistrement.
Le délai avait été prolongé à plusieurs reprises. La dernière date donnée était le 30 novembre.
Un nombre important des 31 millions d’habitants du Ghana n’ont pas encore acquis de carte d’identité nationale, ce qui rend difficile l’enregistrement de leurs cartes SIM.
Les autorités affirment que plus de 20 millions de lignes ont été entièrement enregistrées jusqu’à présent. Les particuliers sont autorisés à enregistrer un maximum de 10 cartes SIM avec leur carte d’identité nationale.
