Au Ghana, à moins de deux ans de la prochaine élection présidentielle, la classe politique s’active déjà. Ainsi, à l’issue des primaires du Congrès national démocratique (NDC) qui s’est tenu ce dimanche à Accra, l’ex-président ghanéen John Dramani Mahama a été désigné candidat à l’élection présidentielle de 2024 par la principale formation politique du pays.

M. Mahama, 64 ans, a remporté le soutien écrasant des délégués du parti, qui l’ont désigné à 98,9% des voix, contre 1,1% pour l’autre candidat en lice, l’ancien maire de la ville de Kumasi (sud) Kojo Bonsu.
Après deux mandats de quatre ans, le président Nana Akufo-Addo doit quitter le pouvoir en 2024, comme prévu par la Constitution, au moment où le Ghana fait face à l’une des pires crises économiques qu’il ait connues depuis des décennies.
Plus de 355 000 délégués du NDC étaient attendus dans 401 centres de vote à travers le pays pour le scrutin de samedi.
Un temps en lice, l’ancien gouverneur de la banque centrale Kwabena Duffuor s’était retiré de la course vendredi soir, affirmant que le parti n’était pas prêt à conduire « une élection libre et juste ».
M. Mahama avait été battu lors de la présidentielle 2016 par Nana Akufo-Addos, du Nouveau Parti patriotique (NPP), et avait encore échoué en 2020.
Sa victoire à la primaire de son parti ne faisait guère de doute pour nombre d’analystes, en raison de son expérience et de son influence au sein du NDC.
« Il a fait ses preuves et possède une grande expérience (…) Le parti a plus de chances de revenir au pouvoir avec Mahama qu’avec n’importe quel autre candidat », a déclaré Kwame Asah-Asante, professeur de sciences politiques à l’université du Ghana.
Le parti au pouvoir tiendra sa primaire en novembre 2023. Le scrutin présidentiel est prévu le 7 décembre 2024.
Le prochain président devra répondre à la grave crise financière que connaît ce pays ouest-africain anglophone, grand producteur d’or et de cacao, mais qui a vu la charge de sa dette exploser sous l’impact de la pandémie de Covid-19 et du conflit ukrainien.
Il s’est finalement résolu à faire appel au FMI et a conclu en décembre avec l’institution un pré-accord pour obtenir 3 milliards de dollars de prêts étalés sur trois ans et conditionnés à la mise en place de réformes économiques, pour repousser le spectre d’un défaut de paiement évoqué par certains économistes.
Le pays, tout comme ses voisins togolais et béninois, fait également face au risque de contagion des violences jihadistes du Sahel dans le nord de son territoire.
