Après 50 ans, l’apparition de difficultés sexuelles pourrait révéler des risques accrus de cancers et de maladies cardio-vasculaires. Quoi de plus banal qu’un homme de plus de 50 ans qui se plaint de troubles de l’érection? Quoi de plus fréquent qu’une baisse de libido chez des femmes du même âge?
Pourtant, ces symptômes méritent que l’on aille au-delà des explications sexologique habituelles (désengagement du couple, monotonie, frustrations), à en croire l’étude que viennent de publier des chercheurs anglais, autrichiens, italiens et espagnols dans les «Archives of sexual behavior.»
En analysant les données concernant 2577 hommes et 3195 femmes d’au moins 50 ans entrés dans une étude longitudinale (de suivi des personnes dans le temps), les épidémiologistes se sont aperçus que l’apparition de troubles sexuels pouvait précéder l’apparition d’un problème de santé dans l’année qui suit.
L’alerte du déclin de l’activité sexuelle
«L’une des découvertes majeures de notre étude longitudinale est que le déclin de la fréquence des rapports sexuels est associé à une détérioration de l’état de santé auto déclarée, à la fois pour les hommes et pour les femmes», écrivent les chercheurs. Mais dans le détail, l’impact n’est pas le même pour les deux sexes.
Ainsi les hommes qui souffrent d’un trouble de l’érection font plus que doubler (de 2,1% à 5%) leur risque de maladie coronarienne (artères du cœur) et augmentent de 73% celui d’avoir un cancer (qui passe de 4,4% à 7,1%). Ceux qui affichent une baisse de libido augmentent aussi de 63% leur risque de cancer. Quant aux femmes, celles qui rapportent un déclin de la fréquence de leur activité sexuelle doublent (de 1,7% à 3,4%) leur risque d’accident vasculaire cérébral. Même chose pour celles qui témoignent de difficultés d’excitation.
Cette augmentation des risques est bien évidemment une association, et non une relation de cause à effet. Les auteurs de l’étude manquent par ailleurs de données pour reconstituer précisément la chronologie liant les difficultés sexuelles et les troubles de santé. Mais ces travaux ont le mérite d’attirer l’attention sur le bilan général de santé nécessaire devant un trouble sexuel, en particulier après 50 ans.
