La police kenyane a commencé à exhumer les restes de plus d’une douzaine de tombes présumées dans l’est du pays, supposées contenir des adeptes d’une secte chrétienne qui croyaient qu’ils iraient au paradis s’ils mouraient de faim.
Le pasteur Makenzie Nthenge avait exercé une emprise sur les fidèles de sa secte de la zone côtière de Kilifi, en leur demandant de se laisser mourir de faim pour «rencontrer Jésus».
Jeudi, des détectives des homicides ont délimité des parcelles de terre avec des bâtons et du ruban adhésif jaune dans la forêt de Shakahola, dans le comté de Kilifi, près de l’endroit où la police a secouru 15 membres de la Good News International Church la semaine dernière, selon des images diffusées par Citizen TV.

Au cours de fouilles menées ces derniers jours dans la forêt de Shakahola, à quelques dizaines de kilomètres de la ville côtière de Malindi, les enquêteurs ont exhumé vingt-et-un corps, de personnes qui semblent s’être laissées mourir de faim.
«Nous n’avons même pas effleuré la surface, ce qui indique clairement que nous aurons probablement d’autres corps d’ici la fin de l’opération», a déclaré une source policière à l’AFP. Des tests ADN devraient être effectués pour déterminer la raison de leur mort. Au moins trois enfants figuraient parmi les victimes, a précisé une source policière.
Le chef de l’église, Paul Mackenzie, a été arrêté à la suite d’une dénonciation suggérant également l’existence de tombes peu profondes appartenant à au moins 31 des fidèles de Mackenzie.
Titus Katana, un ancien membre de l’église, a aidé la police à identifier les tombes.
« Nous avons montré les tombes à la police, et en plus, nous avons sauvé la vie d’une femme qui n’avait plus que quelques heures, sinon elle serait également morte », a déclaré Katana à Citizen TV.
Matthew Shipeta de Haki Africa, un groupe de défense des droits humains, a déclaré avoir vu au moins 15 tombes peu profondes dans la forêt.
Helen Mikali, la gérante d’un foyer pour enfants qui aidait également les enquêteurs, a déclaré qu’elle s’était rendue dans plusieurs villages voisins où parents et enfants avaient disparu. « Personnellement, j’ai visité environ 18 tombes d’enfants », a déclaré Mikali à Citizen TV. Elle n’a pas dit comment elle savait que les tombes contenaient les restes d’enfants.
Le mois dernier, la police a arrêté puis relâché Mackenzie, qu’ils ont identifié comme étant Paul Nthenge Mackenzie, de l’église Good News International, avait encouragé des « citoyens ignorants », après avoir subi un lavage de cerveau, de « mourraient de faim sous prétexte de rencontrer Jésus. Le groupe de fidèles avait été retrouvé par la police dans une forêt où ils vivaient depuis plusieurs jours. 15 personnes gravement malades ont été retrouvées, mais seulement 11 sont arrivées vivantes à l’hôpital. Le pasteur à été arrêté, inculpé, puis libéré sous caution de 100 000 shillings kenyans.
Le pasteur avait également encouragé les parents de deux garçons à affamer et étouffer leurs enfants à mort.
